Volkswagen Golf GTI Expert Review
Zigwheels team says
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a legendary hatchback which goes back to the mid 70s when it first made its entry. Over the past 5 decades, the car has become an icon which inspired an entire segment of cars. Now into its 8th generation, the Golf GTI last received a facelift for the 2025 model year. This model is quite contemporary with a new attractive design, updated infotainment, a larger touchscreen and new software, modern interior controls. The 2025 GTI facelift arrived in the UAE earlier this year. This five-seater hatchback, over the years, has created a unique, premium niche in the UAE’s hatchback market.
The Golf GTI retains its sporty, fun-to-drive and multifaceted characteristics in this new avatar, and commands reasonable demands among young buyers in the Emirates. The latest model gets some new updates that expand its appeal to newer customer profiles.
Interior
Design & Quality
The interior takes a big leap upward in this new Golf GTI, and rightfully so, as buyers want a modern and highly tech-laden experience in their car. And, Volkswagen has tried to make it exactly that way, where the focus is on the driver and passengers' comfort. The big change is the introduction of a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with MIB4 software and ChatGPT-integrated voice assistance, coupled with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The design is simplistic but quite influential as well. The quality of materials is convincing, like soft-touch plastics on the upper dashboard, Vienna leather upholstery comes as a standard, and tartan plaid fabric seats, a direct tribute to the GTI’s legacy. The red stitching and ambient lighting with 30 colour options are just awesome, which makes the cabin highly sophisticated. The build quality is what you expect from a German car, solid and precise, with durable materials. The dashboard is subtly tilted toward the driver, boosting ergonomics, while the flat-bottom steering wheel appears chunky and tactile.
Front Seat
The front bucket seats are outstanding, aptly providing greater comfort for longer journeys. The manual adjustments appropriately help with a wide range of movement for a perfect seating position. The heated and ventilated seats are noteworthy to tackle the UAE’s heat, while the height-adjustable driver’s seat allows a commanding view of the road, and adds to your safer driving elements. The multi-function steering wheel has physical buttons, replacing the previous touch-sensitive controls, a much-needed upgrade considering practicality.
Electronic Parking Brake
The electronic parking brake is a new technology pretty standard these days, and the Golf GTI gets one, which is integrated with hill-start assist, located on the centre console. This is helpful for easier parking in hilly or descending areas or tight spaces.
Rear Seat
It is quite noticeable that passengers at the rear are also well taken care of with space, comfort and usability. The rear bench seat has surprising space for a compact hatchback, with sufficient knee and headroom for two adults or three children. Rear AC vents, a center armrest, and USB-C ports keep passengers comfortable and connected, and families will love this whole setting. But one minor inconvenience could be the high floor hump, which at times could limit middle-seat usability,
AC Vents
The dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents makes the cabin fresh and cool quickly at any given time. This is a blessing when driving through the summer because all of us know the UAE’s weather conditions.
Storage Options
The Golf GTI has always been a practical hatch, and one big aspect of that is storage space. Which is frankly a lot to help you carry all your essentials for a day or a long drive. This includes a spacious glovebox, door-mounted bottle holders (up to 1-litre bottles), a centre console with storage, and a rear armrest compartment.
Armrest
Front and rear centre armrests with cupholders are provided to keep in mind your comfort. This is an added advantage that makes the Golf GTI a relaxing experience for long drives. The padded armrests are good for storage as well as giving a premium feel to the cabin.
Charging Options
There are multiple USB-C ports, a 12V socket, and an optional wireless charging pad. Rear USB-C ports are a hit with passengers.
Boot Space
It is a hatchback, so the boot space is moderate, measuring 380 litres, which can be expanded to 1,237 litres when folded flat, as per your needs, on the occasional times when luggage or cargo hauling is required. But in general, the boot is quite enough for everyday needs, like grocery runs, gym bags, or weekend getaways. A cargo management system prevents items from sliding, a thoughtful feature that families will appreciate, as it will help not mixing up things.
Safety
- Seven airbags including driver, front passenger, curtain, side, and center
- Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go
- Lane Keep Assist
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
- Parking Assist
- 360-degree camera
- Front and rear parking sensors
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System
- ISOFIX child seat anchors
- Hill-Start Assist
Exterior
The latest updates to this hatchback make it highly aspirational as far as its exterior goes. With all-new attractive exterior colours, redesigned LED lighting makes the Golf GTI look more distinctive than its predecessor. It is successful in keeping in true aggressive sporty blend with the clean design language of the Golf lineup.
Measuring 4,287 mm in length, 1,789 mm in width, and 1,463 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,631 mm, the Golf GTI, like always, appears compact as it is a hatchback, and so underlines city car credentials. Its 136 mm ground clearance points towards sporty handling over off-road capability, and thus a perfect city driver on the UAE’s relatively high-quality roads or even the occasional twisty mountain routes. What is also noticeable is that this facelift is the sharper front face with the latest wheel designs, and new lighting, making it quite sophisticated. Its low-slung posture and aerodynamic lines highlight its performance potential, while premium touches like LED headlights and a panoramic sunroof are stylish.
Front
The front of the 2025 Golf GTI is about a smart, blacked-out honeycomb grille, and you can clearly see the offset GTI badge and a famous red stripe, which goes all the way across the top, connecting the all-LED projector headlights. These headlights have been integrated with daytime running LEDs, which is quite a differentiator. The lower bumper has a large air intake and optional X-themed LED fog lamps, boosting the overall look and also helping in faster cooling of the turbocharged engine. The bright VW logo is appealing and looks quite chic.
Side
From the side, you’ll admire the Golf GTI’s low profile and sporty proportions. The new model gets the shiny 18-inch Richmond alloy wheels as standard, with optional 19-inch Estoril or Adelaide alloys for a bolder stance. The red brake callipers peek through the wheels, indicating the car’s performance character. The Chrome window surrounds and body-colored side mirrors with integrated turn signals further boost its premiumness, while the lowered suspension focuses on its sporty ethos. Overall, the side profile suits well to the car exterior and matches the desing, clean yet dynamic, with exclusive GTI badges fortifying its hot hatch identity.
Alloy Wheels
The Golf GTI’s 18-inch Richmond alloy wheels balance between style and performance, and they are great when it comes to grip for a fun drive. The higher 19-inch Estoril or Adelaide wheels also look attractive and give the car an aggressive stance and handling precision.
Rear
On the rear, Golf GTI gets unique smoked-effect LED taillights with animated unlocking graphics, which enhance overall modernness. The style is further elevated by a sporty diffuser, dual exhausts, and a roof-mounted spoiler establishes its performance pedigree, while the Volkswagen logo and GTI badging fulfil the car’s look. The rear wiper and washer are compact, higher quality, and do the job of keeping visibility clear during dusty or rainy conditions.
Colors
The Golf GTI is now available in as many as eight exterior colours, including Pure White, Deep Black, Kings Red, Urano Grey, Reflex Silver, Atlantic Blue, Dolphin Grey, and Moonstone Grey.

City Performance
The Golf GTI’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and 7-speed DCT are known for their performance for a perfect city drive. What also helps is the compact size, accurate and soft steering for a leisurely drive. The reasonably higher fuel efficiency is an added benefit that makes it not only a great car to drive but also light on your pocket if you choose to drive a daily driver.
Highway Performance

On highways, the Golf GTI is equally impressive, primarily due to the powerful engine and strong acceleration, the combination of which is a result of a great drive every single time. The outstanding figures of power and torque, 261 hp and 370 Nm, respectively, are here to make your drive effortless, be it speed on the open highway or overtaking; it's just amazing how capable the powertrain is. Additionally, the Drive Mode Selector offers Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual modes, making your experience even more delightful by tuning it to your liking
Ride and Handling
One of the most strong attributes of the Golf GTI has to be its ride and handling. This sporty hatch is always a pleasure to drive, which is further accelerated by its rather superb and effortless handling. The MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear setup, both with coil springs, telescopic dampers, and anti-roll bars, are excellent in enhancing your sharp handling, grip, and ride comfort. Similarly, the front-wheel-drive, nicely coupled with a limited-slip differential, makes outstanding traction and cornering grip, making a blast on curving and twisting roads.

Variant
Choose from three available variants of the Golf GTI in the UAE right now.
Golf GTI Package 0
This is an entry-level variant which comes with the same 2.0L turbo engine and 7-speed DSG, and there is a lot of emphasis on driver engagement. As far as features go, keeping the base variants in mind, you get LED lights, a digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment, a multi-function steering wheel, and solid standard safety without any luxury features that you find on the top variant.
Golf GTI Package 1
This mid-level variant combines sporty performance along with several comfort, convenience and safety features with some extra premium in the price. The powertrain consists of the 265hp 2.0L TSI engine, 7-speed DSG, and features include manual driver seat adjustment, 10.4-inch touchscreen, 10.2-inch digital display, wireless charging, keyless entry, LED lighting, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and other key active safety features enhance the car's daily usability.
Golf GTI Package 2
The top-end variants get everything that is available on the model, and Volkswagen makes your ownership experience totally worth it. You hardly miss anything by paying high value. Over and above the two variants, here you get premium features like power-adjustable ventilated leather seats, a 10.4-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital display, wireless charging, an auto-dimming mirror, heated steering, advanced safety systems ( including lane change assist, blind spot warning), sunroof, and a 7-speed DSG for sporty driving.
Zigwheels Recommendation: We picked the Golf GTI Package 1 for its combination of features and performance. You get almost everything that is necessary, and don’t lose a lot, but also pay a reasonable price, not necessarily shelling out a lot. And, essentially, this variant actually hit the sweet spot. It gets a mix of performance, premium features (19-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio), and advanced safety at a price that remains competitive against rivals.
Verdict
The Golf GTI is an iconic car that has been loved and admired for decades across the world, and it is for good reasons. This legendary hatchback continues to represent exhilarating performance with everyday usability. Volkswagen, on its part, with the latest facelift successfully retains its popular character but at the same time tries to bring in more contemporary design and a tech-forward cabin that today’s buyers prefer. With the addition of a 12.9-inch touchscreen and smart assistant integration and a refined and powerful 261-hp engine that pumps your adrenaline.
If you pitch the hatch against its mainstream, including the Honda Civic Type R or Mazda3 Hatchback, the GTI scores a lot better. If you’re searching for a car that is fun to drive along with practicality for everyday use, packed with modern tech, the Golf GTI comes right on top.
